Batman/The Maxx: What to Remember Before the Unfinished Crossover's Return

Batman/The Maxx: Arkham Dreams is about to continue, and here is everything you need to know about the Maxx and the long-delayed IDW/DC crossover.

(WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for The Maxx as well as minor spoilers for Batman/The Maxx, written and illustrated by Sam Keith and published by IDW.)

Although it's not as prominent as it once was, The Maxx is one of the more notable independent comics ever published, even scoring an animated series on MTV in its heyday. Although the core Maxx series has been over for quite some time, the final issues of the long-delayed Batman/The Maxx crossover are just around the corner. Now, we're taking a closer look at everything you need to remember before the series ends.

The Maxx, created as well as originally written and drawn by Sam Kieth, followed the titular The Maxx aka Dave on his quest to protect and provide companionship for the Jungle Queen aka Julie Winters. The first major arc of the series, published in 1993, saw The Maxx protecting Julie from the serial predator Mr. Gone. He is able to telepathically access other peoples' Outbacks, vast and primitive landscapes that exist entirely within each person's subconscious mind. The Maxx confronts Mr. Gone in both the real world and The Outback, although isn't until the final confrontation between Mr. Gone and Julie that it is revealed that Julie unknowingly created The Maxx by striking Dave with her car and leaving him under a pile of trash after having opened a link to her Outback which bled onto him.
